At the end of this summer term and the 2023/2024 school year, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who makes up our Trust community and for the part you play in ensuring we are successful in all that we do. Over the last year, trustees and senior leaders have completed a piece of work revisiting our vision and values as they are now 10 years old (how time flies!). We will continue to develop, share and promote these in the new academic year but are confident that our new ethos
"Inspiring Excellence Together - A place where communities matter and individuals thrive"
now really reflects who we have grown to become.
South Axholme Academy is an integral part of Isle Education Trust and it has been a pleasure to see the amazing work that has taken place over this year. The energy, enthusiasm and motivation of the entire staff team, students and governors has been unerring and with the support of parents, has ensured that students have thrived and the academy as a whole continues to go from strength to strength.
With the recent change of government and associated new Education secretary, we do not know what awaits us over the summer and next year, but I can guarantee that whatever it is, we will continue to work tirelessly to make the experience for all involved positive, enjoyable and successful.
I hope you have a wonderful summer.
Sarah Sprack

Music Performances
The Summer Showcase was well attended on the 19 June 2024.
The Rock Band was in attendance alongside the Wind Band, playing many classics.
Great performances by all.
In other music news:
William and Niamh Scullion and Molly Irwin visited Germany with Doncaster Youth Jazz Orchestra.
The three students have not yet been in the orchestra a year, but have established themselves as very competent players. They played beautifully to hundreds of people around the Herten area, Germany, making great friendships with their exchange families too.

We have seen more trips and visits this term, including college visits, a trip to Naples (which was a first time venture), the Year 8 Low Mill outward bounds visit and more! It is great to see the enthusiasm and excitement of our students on these trips, which play an important part of their learning and development.
Thank you for your continued support to the staff and for parent/carer commitment in allowing students to attend these trips, where they gain such enriching educational opportunities and experiences.
In the autumn term we have further theatre trips planned and various overseas visits.

Bay of Naples
We were excited to take a group of Year 10 students on an educational trip to Southern Italy. The trip aimed to provide a fantastic experience, offering opportunities for cultural and academic development, and a chance to immerse in the Italian way of life.
During the trip, students had the chance to make excursions that involved sightseeing of both human and physical geography. Highlights included visits to Mount Vesuvius, Pompeii, and the idyllic island of Capri. These experiences not only enhanced their geographical knowledge but also created lasting memories.
The trip was based around the enchanting cities of Naples and Sorrento, providing a rich and diverse backdrop for learning and discovery.
The trip was an invaluable experience for our students, broadening their horizons and fostering a deeper appreciation for different cultures and histories.

Low Mill
As you may be aware, each June for a number of years, we have organised an outdoor activities visit to Low Mill Young People’s Centre, Askrigg in Wensleydale. This is a residential outdoor pursuit centre and the visit has proved to be very popular with our students over the years.
The students were involved in a wide range of activities including abseiling, caving, orienteering, canoeing and gorge walking. Qualified outdoor pursuits instructors conduct all the courses with South Axholme staff in a supporting role.

Care Into The Future
We were delighted to offer students a chance to visit Doncaster Dome on 5 July 2024, where the Year 8 students had the opportunity to attend the 'We Care Into the Future' event. This visit provided them with an insightful look into careers within the health and care sector.
The students learnt about various career paths, from nursing and midwifery to physiotherapy and social care. They were able to engage with professionals and gain a deeper understanding of the skills and qualifications required for these roles.
This interactive experience enabled students to try their hand at keyhole surgery and perform an autopsy on a digital cadaver. This visit has enriched their understanding of potential career opportunities and has broadened their horizons. We believe that this visit has been truly beneficial for their personal and professional development.
We look forward to continuing to support and guide students as they progress through their educational journey.

Writing Competition
Molly Evans Year 8 was entered into a writing competition by Mrs Dyer and has won the brilliant opportunity to have her work published in an anthology. Her task was to create a thrilling mini-saga and she was limited to 100 words!
Molly wrote "The Labyrinth", which you can read below:
Dust engulfed the scene, devouring structures relentlessly, leaving devastation in its wake. It was a labyrinth with no exit, a maze with no prize; each moment a painful reminder of what once was.
As I stumbled through the ruins, despair threatened to consume me without mercy. Then, a glimmer of hope: a distant beeping.
Racing toward it, exhaustion giving way to determination, I found myself in a hospital room, greeted by the miraculous sight of my mother. Relief flooded me, mingled with disbelief at my survival. "We thought the Earthquake got you," she whispered, shattering the silence with her words.
Well done Molly!

Academy Update - Teaching and Learning

Home Learning - Satchel One
At South Axholme Academy, home learning is an essential part of school life as it supports the curriculum, subject interests and develops core skills such as organisation and independent learning.
Research from the Education Endowment Foundation shows that ‘the impact of homework on learning is consistently positive leading to on average five months’ additional progress.’
To help support students, all home learning at South Axholme is set on a platform called Satchel One. We have successfully used this platform for a number of years , and ithas proved to be very successful, allowing parents/carers to keep track of their child's homework. As we embrace an increasingly digital approach to work, this provides an up-to-date way of working for all of our community.
Please encourage your child to download the Satchel One app onto their devices. Students can also access Satchel One via any computer if they are unable to download the app.
If you have not yet got your parent information to enable you to access Satchel One to support your child at home, please contact the academy.
We thank parents and students for their cooperation with this.

For a reminder about how parents and students can log into satchel one, please see the link to the website here.
